Peugeot XDP 4.90 Specif. 0179 engine advice - YBW peugeot xdp 4 90 engine are a good way to achieve details about operating certainproducts.
The boat has been neglected and had a lot of rain water sitting in the bilges. This appears to have got into the gearbox which is in a pretty bad state, however, the engine seems to run OK.
I am planning on replacing the gearbox with a new Techno Drive TMC 260, but before I do that should I consider replacing the engine at the same time. Is the XDP 4.90 considered to be a 'good' engine?
The boat was a bargain so if I do end up replacing the engine and gearbox it won't be the end of the world.
All advise gratefully received.

One of the technical differences between the 8- and 16-valve 1.8-liter engines is the lack of hydraulic lifters in the first, which is why the gap must be adjusted with washers.
The 2.0-liter engine delivers 132 liters. from. (after 2001, it was replaced by another motor of the same capacity with a capacity of 136 liters. from). Among diesel engines, the Peugeot 406 with 1.9- and 2.1-liter XUD series turbodiesels with a capacity of 90 liters was most often met. from. and 110 liters. with., respectively. Later they were replaced by DW (or HDi) diesel engines. Such motors have a volume of 2.0 and 2.2 liters. The first (depending on the setting) gave 90 or 110 liters. S., the second – 133 liters. from.
