I watch Mukta, the primetime Kannada serial on ETV regularly. For people whose idea of a soap opera is defined by Ekta Kapoor‘s garish K-series or the tantric-twist Tamil serials and their remakes, T.N. Seetharam‘s Mukta is a balm for the eyes and the mind. The serial was 'Garva' directed by Prakash Belavadi. Prakash is the son of the famous make up artist Naani and famous actress Bhargavi Narayan (Jaajikatte bhargavi in Muktha). Garva was a gem of a serial. Ananth Nag was brilliant, so were other actors!
TOP 5 - AMRUTHAVARSHINI (SUVARNA)For all the action that is taking place in the kitchen of Desai Family, the serial is ranked FIFTH in the list.
TOP 4 - RADHA KALYANA (ZEE KANNADA)
This is a story of the bond between two sisters and the sacrifices they make for each other, specially Pachcche who gets married to a mentally challenged person Amay on the condition that Amay's mother agrees to marry her second son to Neela who was not getting any good marriage proposals due to the color of her skin. After a lot of 'hungama' in the plot, Neela enters into a wed-lock with Thejas Sahukar. Now the story currently deals with the dark secret behind Amay's madness.

RAJU writes: Let me confess.
It engages you, looks at the institution of family in a more realistic socio-economic context, brings in issues of contemporary boiling (globalisation, corporate ruthlessness, CET admission, underworld dealings, real estate business etc) to the fore and offers an opinion, that is mostly in tune with the saner pulse of the masses.
The only thing about which Mukta seems off-the-mark is when it routinely romanticises the judiciary, but still one could pardon it as that is the most entertaining and popular element of the serial. At a time when newspapers and TV have become instruments of propaganda for the moneyed, reactionary middle-classes, failing largely to take note of larger social rumblings, Mukta is an exception.
Something that offers a 23-minute catharsis five nights a week and injects mild doses of optimism to a heavily depressed living. But last night I was in for some disappointment about the serial and its director and lead actor. Seetharam alias Chandrashekhar Prasad alias CSP appeared just before the show began and made an announcement. It went something like this: “Thank you all for watching Mukta. Of late I have been thinking of winding up the serial as we have reached close to 600 episodes. “But there is immense pressure both from ETV and the viewers on us to continue.
I am in a dilemma, so please SMS us and let your opinion known. If you want us to continue the serial type ‘MUKTA Y’ or if you want us to discontinue it type ‘MUKTA N’ on your cell phones and send it to us.” I forget the number he mentioned. This, I instantly thought, was unbecoming of the director and all that he made us believe his serial stood for. If this man lacks the independent judgment to end the serial when it should, then, I asked myself, why did I waste 23 minutes of my time every night to watch what he was showing me?
With this one announcement I think Seetharam has shot himself in the foot. He has admitted that the world he created was a make-believe one.
The closer-to-reality trust that it had created has been shattered in a minute. Everything was a mirage after all, he seemed to say. It is a stategic error for a man who had grown in stature and nourishes political ambitions. It was better to sign off as someone who understood the world than as a man at the street corner asking for direction to reach his destination, that too through a cheap SMS poll. It would be foolhardy to expect a serial to solve the problems of the world but what I mean to say was that I trusted that abstract halo of commitment and integrity in the man. His worldview was more acceptable than others. Even if he were telling lies, he was more convincing.
One has to have faith, at least for therapeutic reasons, or else there is every chance of growing too bitter and mad about life. But by this one act, Seetharam, an intelligent man, has metamorphosed into a moron in my eyes. The crass commercial purpose of SMS polls is well understood. So, now let me urge you not to participate in this poll, let the director enjoy his dilemma or Trishanku Svarga, that’s if it is true that he has reached that point of suspension.
At least I won’t give you the number that you need to send your SMS to. What are we trying to prove here? That CSP is for sale? That he has run out of conscience?
How can an SMS poll be such a bad thing? What are we opposing, the poll or the vehicle used for it? Seetharam doesn’t need to prove anything. He knows, we know, the channel knows and the sponsors know that the serial is popular. The present quest is just a way to gauge audience reaction to its extension. What can be more democratic than that?
After all, TNS and his team pioneered the ‘samvaada’ technique. If we oppose SMS polls we must oppose that too. Frankly, I think this is a non-debate. If it had happened in the West we would have hailed it as a masterstroke of “interactive programming”. Because it is a brown man doing it, we cannot even appreciate it.
Maybe we will if the New York Times reports on TNS’ fine experiment. I fail to understand what the intentions are, from the author of this article. Is asking public opinion a sin?
Or usage of SMS poll for feedback a crime? Becuase of this poll, the author asks himself “why did I waste 23 minutes of my time every night to watch what he was showing me”, and what more, calls the director of this serial as “moron”. ಇದೊಂದು ಪೂರ್ವಾಗ್ರಹ ಪೀಡಿತ ಲೇಖನ ಅನ್ನದೆ ವಿಧಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. Dear author, feel free to not to vote in the poll. Whoever is interested, they will definetely vote.
Yesthey dont need to get number from you. By the way, thanks for giving publicity for this poll:) Like.
Aatmasakshi wrote: “After all, TNS and his team pioneered the ’samvaada’ technique. If we oppose SMS polls we must oppose that too.” Key difference is that people are not spending money in attending samvaada and it doesn’t generate revenue for the producers (except the ad revenue while showing the program). But SMS is a revenue generator – that’s why all those “reality” shows like “Inidan Idol” etc urge their viewers to vote by SMS in large numbers. The more you vote, the more money they make.
I guess the author’s point is that someone like TNS who was regarded as being above such commercial thinking has to resort to such cheap gimmicks to earn money. For the record, I don’t follow Mukta regularly, and from what I have seen of his serials, I consider Seetharam one of the better directors, but I never had any illusions of him being above commercial interests or any such thing.
So, hearing about this SMS poll doesn’t change my opinion about anything. Well, I have never watched ‘muktha’, but I have heard a lot of good things about it. I fail to understand why the author is ‘shocked’ by TNS’ behavior vis-a-vis attitude. With all due respects, at the end of the day we all live in a society ruled by corporate gurus. You have to appreciate the brilliant direction, story and substance of the art work called ‘mukta’.
Don’t expect the director’s life to be embedded in there. It just doesn’t work that way.Sure, I respect your decision not to SMS. But, get over it and enjoy watching ‘mukta’, if it still continues. It is a well earned deliema for T.N. Seetharam who was asked to continue from both the TV channel and viewers. I don’t know how many directors of serials go through this kind of ‘Good Problems’.
Yes, the current SMS sending madness also got its latest victim i.e Mr.T.N. But he may needed the fast openion of the viewers before giving some twist to the serial since he laready shot many episodes which we are yet to watch. So he may wanted to rebuff himself he is doing the right thing or not. Appearantly he got a Movie directing opportunity after critaclly acclaimed ‘MATHADANA’. I thinks since ‘Mukta’ already crossed 600 episodes it is good for everyone that Mr.T.N. Will close the serial in good note soon.
Any way he loast his path now in the serial since lot of side stories developed apart from catching court room drama which taking serial no where. I hope instead of watching a story lost serial we should let Mr.T.N. Seetharam to try his hand on silver screen. If you are reading this Mr.T.N.
‘MUKTA’ was very good thanks for it and i will be waiting for your movie. Thanks you have given lot of insights to issues like CET, multinational companies exploitation in the name of globalisation etc. Hello friends, who r saying that TNS is doing for the publicity. Sorry, already TNS has popularity and his serials are very much different from other serials which is a like bubble gum, chewing it without taste. We should appreciate TNS for making us to think atleast a while about the social problems in and around our society.
I heartly thank him, because of his serial many of people started to think positively. Coming to SMS agenda, yes, in this commercial world everything stands on money yaar. A man needs money for everything, for showing good also v need money. Its ur wish not to participate in poll.
I respect it. But this is non-debate issue yaar. TNS Sir, if u r reading this.
I pay thanx through this also. If u ask me, Plz continue the serial with more social messages as u r doing untill today. Thought provoking article – good summarisation of Mukta. But I think it jumps to conclusions too quickly.

It was nice reading the responses here and here is one more to add to them. The very bane of Indian culture is that anybody says something having even a small flavor of truth, we tend to start idolising (unfortunately many people time and again have taken undue advantage of this but that’s a different question). The moment we idolise, we are holding that person in higher stature than ourselves – and we are isolating him/her from ourselves. Forgetting or ignoring that the person has his own vulnerabilities, we raise him to the sky, and if ever that vulnerability comes to light, we throw him on the floor. In case of TNS, he himself has been bold enough to candidly discuss about his inability to make a decision – not any decision of course but this particular decision. Let us go into why he found it a ‘dharmasankata’ (ethical conflict) as he put it, just a few points before that Someone in a samvaada asked TNS whether in real life he was not at all a money minded person.
TNS answered very clearly: “amma, adu bari dhaaraavahiyalli maaDiruva naTane ashTe”. It is only a serial.
It is up to us to take it and the beautiful ideas in it as seriously as we like. As several have noted here, indeed a lot of people are thinking very positively. Even the responses here even though differring with the article are very positive. As far as SMS is concerned, maybe there was a commercial aspect to it of making money, quite possible.
But he could’ve made that a regular feature at the end of every episode (is there any limit to possible questions?? Could be about guesses about plot, etc) also giving prizes etc.
If he wanted to ask a question, apart from SMS, what other current widespread technological ways exist for him to ask viewers for an opinion poll? Not half as widespread as we IT savvy people would like to imagine.
I’ve never met him so far, and not in any hurry to meet him, but just my guess that someday we’ll cross paths. But even then I feel I’ve understood him to a certain extent, and its from that little understanding that I’m writing here, about why he got into the dharmasankaTa. First a word on any creative work. How often is it that we put in 100% – and I mean really uncompromising 100% – of OURSELVES into anything? That is the kind of commitment TNS and his team needs to put continuosly to make Muktha the kind of serial it is. Look at the amount of research and groundwork that goes into many of the more intensive episodes. That is why Muktha stands apart – I like Gowrish’s analogy: other serials like bubble gum, chewing it without taste – and to add to it, bubble gums do not satify hunger either!
It is not a joke to sustain such an uncompromising effort. Putting in so much effort and commitment, every now and then such a person – and TNS has been no exception – feels quite drained. But he (and his team) have no time to rest and has to keep on continuing episode after episode. From what I know from some contacts very personal to him, for this main reason of feeling drained and tired, he has really wanted to stop – a long time ago.
But due to pressure from viewers and E-TV he is continuing. He needs rest, and also he would like to start with his movie. My guess is that he is being made to feel that its his “duty” to continue. So he might have resorted to a people’s poll to see if they really wanted him to give more of himself.
What i feel is he genuinely loves and cares about his audience and fans. Else he could’ve just decided either way. He could’ve used SMSs any day. It must be noted that only people who really care about what the right thing to do is, get into a dharmasankaTa. I agree with the issue you are raising over here.
But, as the post progresses, I think u have over-reacted a little bit, and called names. Yes, it was a mistake on TNS part to ask the public for a decision, whether to continue the serial MUKTHA. As mentioned by “manjay” above, the situation in which TNS is currently may be one that can be called as “Dharmasankata”. If TNS thinks that he can base his decision on public pulse, he is wrong! All the public wants is entertainment at 9 PM and subsequently that slot will be filled with another serial, and MUKTHA will fade away, they will know that a serial of that name was good, but they would forget why. I vaguely remember a sanskrit saying “jaathasya maraNam dhruvam” which means “Everything that has a begining has an End”. TNS would also know this.
I would vote “‘MUKTA N”. May be there was some pressure you can guess what it is? on him to continue the serial. In my opinion, it would be good for TNS to give a FULL STOP to MUKTA. As Gowrish said, other serails are like chewing bubble gum, but no TASTE.
Mukta Kannada Serial Cast List
Bubble gum tastes SWEET in the begining. As we go on chewing it looses taste. Further chewing will taste BITTER. It is better to spit it and take a fresh bubble gum. If TNS continues MUKTA, it may become tasteless bubble gum and he may have to chew it for the heck of it. TNS can start a new serial based on a different theme &. Muktha should not be continued for another three months.
SMS pole is another gimick and people who voted for the serial to continue should think what is the big fun in continuing the serial for 3 more months. It will not make sense.
Muktha especially Gouri, Arundadi, and their family though speaks of their helplessness always talks in lakhs and claims of a salary of a software engineer fresher. Of course, it is not their mistake. Director is liberal in projecting them like that.
Addition of flim star, Annapoornamma, and now Jayashri Raj (who probably is on a holiday from US and just wanted to face the camera before returning back to States) will not make any difference to the serial. The same old court scene, the same old audience sporting a similar look, and the same old reporters and typist with the same dress for the last so many months. Hi all, My family including my 6 year daughter was a regular watcher of muktha serial, infact i used to schedule my office work in such a manner i dont miss the court scenes particularly CSP’s arguments. Even though i am from Tamil Nadu who knows to talk kanada and not to write, i fell in love with this serial by the way the story and the direction of it was done, but off late this serial now turned out to be a regular chewing gum serial which streches for no reason.
I would request CSP to stop this serial at the earliest and start a different one. All his serials tried to highlight the present socio-economic problems that are faced by middle and low class people knowingly or unknowingly. He is trying to make people aware about such issues through his exiting and provocative episodes. It is also true that he got a good response for his way of presentation. I think its really waste of time to tell about his ideas and how he tries to pass on to the public as everyone knows about that. One thing I am sure that those who agree with his principles are with him at the same time more matured and educated people has some principles which are comparable to that of TNS’s. The people who attend the Samvada are nothing but his followers.
It is also worth saying ‘like minded people’ rather than followers as TNS has ignited the fire among his viewers. All these don’t matter as long as it comes out to be productive. Its easy to highlight the problems if one has thinking and analyzing power like TNS and money for the production. But I think it’s the high time to act now to bring down the socio- economic problems. This doesn’t mean he has to join politics or to form his own party, which is again not acceptable.
Its again a notion that politicians are not prompt and carefree, on the other hand he has to act as a PRO who bridge the government and public. For example, the Lokayuktha and the Health Task force which are run by Justice N. Venkatachala and Dr H.
Sudarshan have taken its turn in bringing down the inequalities in the general public. I think he should also involve and support the group in bringing down the inequalities and I think all the viewers and followers will morally support which is more important than any kind of support. Financing will not be a problem for him or even if he has, there are lots of ways to raise the fund. I might be wrong but what I feel is he has to stop making the serials and people know him how he is and what he is. He does not need to do anything more to make people understand the inequalities in the general public. People who has to see the episodes know the concepts of TNS and people who don’t want to follow will never see the shows and hence at present he has lot of supporters and I think he should make use of his power for the betterment of humankind.
I wish I could talk to TNS and say more about the inequalities. I would like to know his home address; so that I can mail him in detail about the same. I wish India; at least Karnataka should change for the betterment of humankind. Changing the name of Capital to ‘Banglur’ is nothing but wasting money to change the database around the world.

But changing the attitude of people will definitely boost overall economy and quality of life. I think few people accept my thinking. Thanks for taking time to read this and if you are thinking the same then please let me know just by replying in this blog. Jithendra Like.
Like many fans of Mutha, I became an Muktha addict and never wanted to miss an episode. My children never could understand why I was so crazy about this serial. I did not mind the Reality checks and enjoyed (even became emotional with tears some times).
The serial reached its peak with judgement episide. Extension was good NEWS, but soon saw the amount of pain put in to add stuff to each episide. Viewership in my home got reduced from 9 to 2. Enquiries became nil. Many characters got a good coverage (Nanjunda, his finance, Madhavi’s father.) in the extension. At what cost!!! This serial deserves a graceful exit raiding on its popularity.
It is time for Muktha to say BYE to the viewers. Let us freshen up to watch the next serial from our dear TNS Like. Ravi anna, Certainly the serial has lost viewership. TNS initially signed the contract with ETV Kan. That the serial will be for a duration of ONE YEAR and not more.
But after seeing the popularity, ETV fellows asked him to simply keep it going, till the SMS drama happened. Just bear Muktha for 8 more episodes. It will be MUKTHAYA for MUKTHA on July 28th!
Mukta Kannada Serial T Sitaram
As told by TNS to us when we met him for an exclusive samvaada. You can read about it here: By the way, TNS is planning a feature film called ‘Mrs.Mukhyamantri” next. We are settled in the US. Two years ago when we were here for a long vacation, we started watching Muktha one day and somehow got glued to it. The story touched almost all aspetcs of society which make the youngsters in India crazy, like Corruption, nepotism, capitation etc. The court scenes were rendered very well.
We thought we missed the serial when we had to leave in November 2004. Surprosingly when we returned in August this year we were very pleased to note that it was still on. We watched and enjoyed the show very much till the completion.
The direction, dialogues and acting were all excellent. We are very proud of Mr.Seetharam who desrves an everlasting recognition for his extraordinary abilities.we will be very happy to get a set of DVDs if available so that we can show the same to our children in the US. Our greetings to him. I wanted to write a letter to him but could not get his email address. All the actors have performed exceedingly well. Good thihg Mukta has ended. I didnt want to last long. Otherwise whole of arundathis family would have committed suicide as the show ended :D. Ok Maya Mruga was the best serial ever. Mukta was good to.

Dont get this type of culture in Kannada scene. A critic is one who knows the price of everything, but the value of nothing. The author seems to have exaggerated the SMS poll issue. Every person has his own point of view. Mr.TNS is a responsible and a renowned director. Its highly irrelevant to criticise whatever he does. Everyone knows that he is the most successful director and he deserves credit for his hard work.
His serials have been very instrumental in addressing the burning issues in the society. No other serial has been so very effective in conveying a message to the society. In this regard, Mr.TNS has scaled heights that are unimaginable by others. We should be responsible enough to appreciate if something good is happening. People who used to criticize serials(after watching ‘K’ series serails by Ekta Kapoor) have started praising the short-screen. Its a good sign that Mr.TNS has been directing serials which invoke social cause.
Let’s appreciate Mr.TNS and wish him all the best for all his future endeavours.
