Diablo 3 Gems Farming

For more help on Diablo 3, read our Crafting, Builds and Tweaks Guide. In this guide we’ll go over some of the more well-known places in the game where you have better chances of efficient farming.

  1. The Countess is the best rune dropper; she once dropped 4 runes for me! Usually it's 2, sometimes 3, seldom is it only one. The higher your clvl, the better the drops throughout the Tower, which will yield chipped gems or a chipped skull (1-2) ammys (1-2) a charm (0-1)and a ring (0-1). The Forgotten Tower is a farmer's delight!
  2. The gem, as others have mentioned, is to rapidly level up new characters, as evident from its level 25 bonus of making any weapon its in to a level 1 char. With a high level gem of ease you can melt any enemies on low torment levels for new characters and get to level 60 in literally like 5-10 minutes.

Blizzard’s patch 2.5.0 on Diablo 3 introduced a couple of interesting features. Even though the patch notes are a testimony to the many changes made in the game, the most notable change was the introduction of the Primal Ancient Legendary weapons.

How to Augment Ancient Item in Diablo 3

Diablo

To augment ancient item Diablo 3 is to add some value to that ancient using the legendary gems in your control. All the value of your game goes into that legendary. Apart from just knowing the D3 augment ancient item procedure, you have to understand the inherent properties of the ancient you are dealing with to ensure that your enhancement efforts bear fruit.

Diablo 3 augment ancient item requirements

  • One ancient item (the one you want to augment)
  • Legendary gem (the higher the gem level the better. Your augmented item will draw its level rating from this gem’s level)
  • 3 flawless royal gems to increase your character’s main statistics

When augmenting ancient items in Diablo 3, you have to understand your gems and their color meaning. This is crucial since the right gem will ensure that you lend the right power to your precious ancient. The good thing is you can always change gem color in the Kanai’s cube as long as you have enough Gem Essence.

Once you find the ingredients you need to do the Diablo 3 ancient item augment, scroll to the last page of Kana’s cube to find your recipe. Everything will be straightforward once you have the recipe.

In some cases, the procedure will force you to use a level 30 legendary item or higher when dealing with specific items.

Feed the ingredients into the all powerful Kanai’s cube, click accept and wait for your augmented ancient.

Can You Augment Ancient Item More than Once?

Yes. You can augment an ancient item twice. You will just have to follow the same augmenting procedure again and ensure you have the necessary ingredients for the augment. The catch is augmentation isn’t cumulative. Any new augment you do will overwrite the previous agumentation. This means you can’t use double augmentation to give your ancients more capabilities.

What are Ancient Items in Diablo 3?

Ancient is a modifier that you can add on any enhanced version of legendary or set items. You can find or discover items in the game and they will always be a great improvement over their non ancient items. An ancient item in D3, therefore, is any item with the Ancient modifier on it.

Dropping the ancient modifier on legendary items, a set of weapons or armor increases stats like strength, intelligence, vitality and Resist All.

How to Find Ancient Items in Diablo 3

Normally, Ancient will occur on level 70 items. This is still fair since you can use level 70 items before leveling up especially if they have the -clvl req modifier in place. You can also use ancient items right from that start as long as you use the Gem of Ease or the Work of Cathan cube recipe to create them.

Finding ancient items in the game is really hard especially that they don’t look any different when on the ground. You can only tell that you have collected an ancient item once it has been profiled and identified. The game inventory gives ancient items an orange border and a green border for set items. The game tooltip will also indicate ‘Ancient’ on the item’s name.

How to Get Ancient Items

Diablo 3 Convert Gems

Ideally, ancients can come from all sources that will give you items in the game. These include:

  • Monster and chest drops
  • Gambling
  • Horadric Caches
  • Kanai’s cube
  • Blacksmith crafting (forging)
  • Farming primal ancient upgrades

The odds of finding ancient with the above approaches vary depending on the ancient drop rate.

Only 10 percent of legendary items gained from gambling, forging or the Kanai’s Cube recipe with no increase on difficulty level will turn out Ancient. The chances of getting your Ancient items from all chest, object, monster and other types of drops stand at 1 percent on Torment 1. They will increase steadily as the Torment levels go up. T6 has the odds at 10% and the increase rate is higher between Torment level 7 and T10.

Diablo 3 Flawless Star Recipe Drop

Any items you craft using the cube or by gambling have a 10 percent chance of coming out as ancient. This includes the Hellfire Amulet and the Hellfire Ring that will come out as an Ancient 10 percent of the times you craft it.

Primal Ancient Requirements

The basic Primal Ancient Requirement demands that you earn a 70 plus GR to start getting the Ancients. You can however still unlock primal ancients if you use your Gem of Ease or Cathan Cube.

How to Get Ancient Legendaries

Ancient Legendaries in Diablo 3 are items in the fifth level (orange level) of item quality. They are one of the strongest and rarest items to find in D3. Diablo 3 fans also call them Legendary items, legs or legos.

What makes Legendaries so valuable even before you augment them with the Ancient modifier is the fact that they can hold affixes that aren’t normal to that type of item. Other Legendaries will have non-re-rollable or re-rollable affixes that are only unique to that given item. For instance, the Azurewrath legendary will damage and occasionally knock away demons and the undead who come near you.

Any normal affix on a legendary will roll higher resulting in a more powerful item. Very few legendary items are just overated rare items that are just not easy to come by.

Acquiring Legendaries

You can find your legendaries after they’re dropped by monsters, destructibles and chest. The only shop that will have Legendaries is the Kadala’s gambling store.

  • You can get other legendaries by crafting them after you get the right blacksmith or jeweler plan
  • Any legendary with a minimum level 70 can only be found in Torment
  • Other legendaries can be found in Horadic Caches

Best Way to Get Ancient Gear in Diablo 3

While most people would want to find their ancient gear in the game world, there definitely are better ways to get Ancient gear in Diablo 3.

  • Do a Rage upgrade with the Kanai cube
  • Reforge what you already have (perfect if you are looking for a specific ancient)
  • Use the Kadala. It gives a great shot at armor related ancients

  • Probability to get an ancient Karlei’s point through upgrade rare: 5%
  • Probability to get an ancient Karlei’s point through reforge legendary: 10%
  • Probability to get an ancient Wand of Woh through upgrade rare: 0.3%

Why Bother With Diablo 3 Ancient Items

If you are still wondering what are ancient items and why you should spend time trying to farm them or hit the minimum requirements and then try to unlock primal ancients, you’ll be excited to learn that Primal Ancients will make your weapons more efficient and make your armor better.

For instant, an ancient on your armor will roll up the mainstat, vitality and resistance up by an impressive 30 percent.

Here is a quick break down on the effect of the Ancient modifier on different items in Diablo 3

Diablo
  • Ancient legendary gloves Mainstat or Vitality goes up to 751 – 1000 from 500 – 700 on normal legendary gloves
  • Ancient Legendary Rings get 501 -600 Mainstat or vitality from 416 – 500 on regular legendary rings
  • Ancient armor and rings get ResAll at 110 – 130 as opposed to 80 – 100 rolls on regular

It seems like a Diablo 3 augment ancient items campaign will do you good service especially if you are planning to play a more offensive game. Remember that you have no control over how you get these ancients and you just can’t set items to ancient as you please.

How Valuable is an Ancient Upgrade

Ancient upgrades are useful if you apply them on the right sets. Ancient weapons are by far the most useful as you will get higher damage from the weapon as opposed to using a non ancient weapon. The benefits trickle down to Ancient armor. An ancient upgrade on your armor will give you way better Mainstat, Vitality and Resistance.

Ancient upgrades on Jewelry are the most undesirable since the upgrade won’t have an impact on important readings like elemental damage, attack speed, critical hit, critical chance and socket. Ancient will only upgrade Mainstat and other affixes.

Farming Gems
Hello, was wondering if anyone has used this as a method of gem farming before.
I noticed at the weekend when doing a hellforge rush with a friend that if you dont all leave the game and do one hellforge for all the characters then the forge still squirts out all the gems for each character but only one rune. In our case we had 4 pcs so three rush characters and we got 3 perfects, 6 flawless etc. I was wondering whether anyone with lots of computers has tried this for collecting gems, anyone who can get 8 versions of diablo running at once can very quickly rush 7 normal characters through to the normal hell forge in a few minutes and get approx 11 perfects for their troubles, repeat this a few times and although it would be mind numbingly boring I cant see any quicker way of farming perfects.
Just a little thought that has been bouncing around in my head for the last few days but then again how many folk have access to 8 pcs/copies of diablo.
Cheers
M
